Synopsis:

Building Diversity and Supporting Women in Technology -

A 2017 survey identified the top barriers faced by women in technology.  Those barriers included a lack of mentors, a lack of female role models, gender bias, unequal growth opportunities and unequal pay for the same skills.  A Northwest Arkansas Community College educator saw a need in her local community to provide women and minorities in the NWA area with the tools and support they need to be successful in technology careers and combat those barriers. We will discuss the community issues for women in technology fields, the future of advancing diversity in technology and how you can become involved helping break down barriers.

Speaker: Kimberly Bertschy

Kimberly Bertschy received her B.S.E and M.S. Operations Management at the University of Arkansas. She also obtained a M.S. Cybersecurity from Utica College, Utica, NY.  Kimberly is currently pursuing a Doctor of Science in Computer Science. Her research interests include security vulnerabilities in the embedded systems of heavy trucks and passenger vehicles, cybersecurity education, and the use of technology to facilitate violence.

Kimberly teaches networking and cybersecurity related topics at Northwest Arkansas Community College. In addition to teaching, she advises the TALONS student club, serves on the behavioral review team and collaborates with community organizations to provide outreach in the areas of technology facilitated violence, internet safety and cybersecurity. Prior to teaching, Kimberly was a Police Investigator for the University of Arkansas Police Department. During her nine years with UAPD, she received computer forensic training from the United States Secret Service and served on a joint task force with the FBI.

Kimberly is an active member and Executive Officer of Infragard Arkansas Members Alliance and sits on the Board of Directors for ArkanSec, LLC. She is the CEO and Chair of the Board for WhaleTech, Women Heroically Accelerating Leadership and Empowerment in Technology.

This meeting is worth one PDU (Professional Development Unit).
